How the market prices the position

Edge rusher is the most consistently overdrafted position relative to board rank, and the reason is simple: pressure is the second most valuable thing in football after quarterback play, and it cannot be manufactured reliably by scheme. Teams will take the traits and coach the rest. A class with several first-round edges pulls defensive players up throughout the round.

What evaluators actually weight

Bend around the corner and first-step quickness are the classic markers, but the rushers who last are the ones with a counter, an inside move that punishes a tackle who oversets. Hand usage separates the productive from the athletic. Run-defence competence determines whether he is a three-down player or a situational one.

The recurring failure mode

Sack totals are a poor primary indicator. Production against poor tackles, or generated by scheme pressure rather than individual wins, inflates numbers in a way pressure rate does not.
