How the market prices the position

Offensive tackle is priced as a premium position because the supply of players with the length and foot speed to play outside is genuinely limited, and because the cost of not having one is measured in quarterback health. Tackles routinely go ahead of their board grade. A tackle who can play left side is worth more than the same player projected to the right.

What evaluators actually weight

Length and foot quickness in pass protection set the floor. Evaluators look at how a tackle handles speed-to-power, whether he can recover once beaten inside, and how he plays when his hands miss. Anchor strength against bull rush separates starters from swing tackles.

The recurring failure mode

The most common miss is the college left tackle whose arm length or foot speed projects inside. That is not a failure, plenty of them become good guards, but a team that drafted a tackle and got a guard paid a tackle price.
