How the market prices the position
Interior line is the market's most reliable discount. Guards and centres are drafted well behind their grades because teams believe the position is fillable later and because the interior is less exposed than the edge. That belief is mostly right, which is why the discount persists. A centre with genuine starting traits is scarcer than a guard and prices slightly higher.
What evaluators actually weight
Play strength and hand placement dominate the evaluation. For centres, the pre-snap responsibility, identifying fronts and setting protections, is as much of the job as blocking, and it is why the position rewards experience over athleticism more than any other line spot.
The recurring failure mode
Interior linemen who win on positioning against smaller college defensive tackles often struggle with NFL nose tackles who can move them backwards. Anchor is the trait that fails to translate most often.
